Nau mai, haere mai i Kirikiriroa, Aotearoa

Welcome from Hamilton, New Zeland

I am a photographer based in Kirikiriroa, Aotearoa (Hamilton, New Zealand). I specialise in landscapes, especially those with moving water - waterfalls, rapids and crashing waves are of special interest. Another major area is astrophotography, focusing on wider images of the night sky. I am motivated by the beauty of this place to share it with people, both here and abroad.

I’ve been dabbling in photography on and off for most of my life. In 1980 or 81, I received a Kodak Disc 4000 for my 10th or 11th birthday. I remember being fascinated by the pictures I could take…and by how fast I went through discs - at only 15 shots, my 11 year old brain went through them quickly. Later, I got to play around with my dad’s camera. He had a Pentax of some sort with two lenses! I was curious fascinated by how the camera body and lenses worked together. Again, I was enamored with the various images I could make with the camera.

As life happened, photography took a backseat to kids, careers, marriage, etc. But with the proliferation of phone cameras, my interest blossomed again. I’d take pictures of the kids and parties and Christmases and the like. But, I’d also take photos of the beautiful state of Alaska. The mountains and rivers and lakes and snow are just amazing to photograph. I found meaning in my images - I could tell stories to people without having to talk very much.

After my children grew up and left home and my marriage ended, I needed new perspectives to make sense of life and the living - I needed change. My innate curiosity drove me to re-contemplate living abroad. During my Uni days, I went to Germany for a Study broad program. I came back from that not wanting to live in the States for the rest of my life.

Four years ago, I made the 16,000km move from Alaska to Aotearoa New Zealand. It’s the culmination of that lifelong dream to live outside the United States. During Covid lockdowns, I was able to concentrate on the craft again and make photography a major priority.
