Hamilton’s Gap for Storms & Waves

Looking north at Hamilton’s Gap

Having just met Jarred Wilson @jarredspec, we talked about getting out and shooting. I looked at the weather and wave forecasts and the tide tables, and we decided to head up to Hamilton’s Gap. Everything seemed to be lining up for a good day. The drive was good, especially since the motorway is now 110 for quite a way up from Hamilton. Once there, Jarred introduced me to his new baby - a GFX100S! It was a nice bit of kit.

Out on the beach, the wind was quite strong. So strong, the OIS and the IBIS weren’t enough to overcome the vibrations in the tripod. My first several images were just not sharp. After talking it over, I decided to try handheld and got the image above. Not perfect, but much better than what I was getting with the S1R mounted.

We watched a couple of storm cells roll in from the sea. The mix of the looming clouds and the broken sun shining through was beautiful. After a few more shots of this vista, I turned my attention to details among the rocks at the beach. I put on the Kas 3-stop and then the 6-stop to slow down the shutter and draw out the incoming and outgoing water. This gave me shutter speeds of 3.2 seconds - not bad for direct sunlight…when it was out.

Overall, a good day of shooting with a new friend.
